Reframing the Classic Chair

Who isn’t partial to the contours and colours of a beautifully designed chair.

An integral part of any  interior design, the right chair provides comfort, visual allure and cultural kudos.

Chair designs by renowned architects immediately pop to the forefront of my mind.

Le Corbusier, LC series of chairs 8 in total , all designed in 1928, some were collaborations. https://www.cuberious.com/en/lc2-petit-confort-chair.html

The ‘Less is More’ man Mies van de Rohe, Barcelona chair,1929.

And

Eero Saarinen, Tulip Chair, 1957.

There are so many choices.

I contemplated which other chair designs evolved into classics that I should be familiar with?

I discovered not only these amazing chairs but their designer Eileen Gray (1878-1976) who was an Irish-born designer and architect.

Gray  is considered one of the most important figures in 20th-century design. She was a pioneer in the modernist movement, and her work often combined traditional techniques with innovative materials and forms.

Gray's designs were characterized by their simplicity, functionality, and elegance. She was known for her attention to detail and her use of high-quality materials. Her work was admired for its clean lines and graceful curves.

Perhaps I could  persuade you with either the Bibendum

The Bibendum Chair: This iconic chair, designed in 1926, is named after the Michelin Man (Bibendum) because of its resemblance to his rotund form. The chair features a curved backrest and seat, as well as padded armrests and a metal frame. It is one of Gray's most recognizable designs and is considered a classic of modern furniture.

Or the Roquebrune?

The Roquebrune Chair: This chair, designed in 1932, is named after the town in southern France where Gray had a second home. The chair features a wooden frame and a seat and backrest made of woven cane. It is an example of Gray's interest in combining traditional techniques with modern forms, and it is considered one of her most comfortable and functional designs.

Perhaps it’s time to discover your own collection of classic chairs and the designers who created them. Or let me know in the comments, suggested additions to an ultimate chair list.
